Constellations
Corvus constellation
Corvus is an ancient constellation. Greek legend tells how Apollo sent his raven to fetch water in a cup. The bird dawdled to feast on figs and then blamed a water snake for the delay. As punishment Apollo placed raven, cup and snake in the sky, where the raven can never reach the cup. The constellation is small but stands out thanks to a quadrilateral of third-magnitude stars, Gienah, Kraz, Algorab and Minkar, with fainter Alchiba set a little apart. Many see it as a sail. Owners of larger telescopes can seek out the Antennae Galaxies, a pair of colliding galaxies. From Central Europe, Corvus sits low in the south on spring evenings, down and to the right of bright Spica in Virgo.
