Constellations
Cepheus constellation
In Greek legend Cepheus was king of Ethiopia, husband of Cassiopeia and father of Andromeda; Ptolemy already listed him as a constellation. His brightest stars form a pentagon resembling a house with a pointed gable, its roof pointing towards the Pole Star. The brightest star is Alderamin, followed by Alfirk, Errai and Kurhah. Because of the slow wobble of Earth's axis, Errai will one day, in the distant future, take over the role of pole star. Delta Cephei is famous as the prototype of the Cepheids, pulsating stars that serve as cosmic yardsticks for measuring distances. Mu Cephei, which William Herschel called the “Garnet Star”, is a deep red supergiant and one of the largest stars known. From Central Europe, Cepheus is circumpolar and easiest to find high in the north on autumn evenings.

Distances from the Hipparcos catalogue. For very distant stars they are uncertain – the year the light set off is therefore only a rough guide.
